US President Donald Trump believes that Russian leader Vladimir Putin “likes the idea” of jointly reducing nuclear weapons arsenals. During a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, the Republican added that he would like to see China involved.
“We would like to see denuclearization. In fact, we have talked [with President Putin] about denuclearization of our two countries, and China would join in ,” Trump said .
Trump also noted that although China’s nuclear arsenal remains quite small, Beijing intends to catch up with both Russia and the United States within the next four to five years. In this regard, Washington is interested in China’s participation in the disarmament process.
Earlier, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said that Trump’s statements that Russia, China and the United States were close to concluding a deal on complete denuclearization were not true. According to him, Washington failed to bring Beijing to the negotiating table.
He added that Russia had prioritised the participation of US allies with nuclear weapons in hypothetical talks. However, neither Britain nor France “showed any desire to join the talks either.”
